The first issued certificate
The first issued certificate was to a former slave from Africa named Fredrick Douglass, who used it to travel between states. This is the story of how certificates came into use in America and what they signify today.
In the 17th century in Europe, paper documents were an expensive commodity that few people could afford.
But as printing became cheaper and more widespread during this period, some traders found an opportunity: They would offer their customers free printed copies of any contract or document (like wills), but retained control over one copy so they could sell it back later on at full price for whatever reason—insurance fraud perhaps?
Or if somebody needed proof of identity when crossing borders. The agreement might be written on both sides with ink that could be erased with a chemical solution.
The system was popular, but it had one big drawback: This new form of paper currency—printed and written on both sides—was so easy to counterfeit that fraudsters were able to create their copies almost as soon as the originals went into circulation.
As long as they weren’t too sloppy about creating an exact copy of the original document’s watermark or seal, nobody would know the difference.
The ability for anyone to produce a reasonably good facsimile meant these documents lost all value very quickly (and predictably).
So for this particular use-case to work, you needed some way of making sure people couldn’t just print out more copies at home themselves without permission from the original printer.
The answer was what’s called a certificate of authenticity, which is essentially an official document that says this particular sheet of paper contains the original text and not some counterfeit or copycat version.
Certificates were issued to people who’d been authorized by the printing company (in person) to create copies for distribution—and everyone else who needed such certificates would have to pay a fee for them upfront before they got one in return.
